Techno-Hell: Breakthrough Slashes ‘Lab-Grown Meat’ Production Costs by Massive Margin

Hot on the heels of Letitia James, George Soros’ diverse puppet, waging lawfare on beef producers, we have the totally coincidental development that “lab-grown meat” manufacturers have achieved a technological breakthrough that could potentially slash production costs by 90%.

Via SciTechDaily (emphasis added):

Cellular agriculture – the production of meat from cells grown in bioreactors rather than harvested from farm animals – is taking leaps in technology that are making it a more viable option for the food industry. One such leap has now been made at the Tufts University Center for Cellular Agriculture (TUCCA), led by David Kaplan, Stern Family Professor of Engineering, in which researchers have created bovine (beef) muscle cells that produce their own growth factors, a step that can significantly cut costs of production

Until now, growth factors had to be added to the surrounding liquid, or media. Made from recombinant protein and sold by industrial suppliers, growth factors contribute to a majority of the cost of production for cultivated meat (up to or above 90%). Since the growth factors don’t last long in the cell culture media, they also have to be replenished every few days. This limits the ability to provide an affordable product to consumers. Taking that ingredient out of the growth media leads to an enormous cost savings.

I wonder how the cost savings for consumers will stack up to the chemotherapy bill they inevitably receive once they are diagnosed with cancer? Or will Bill Gates take care of that? He is a “philanthropist,” after all.

Continuing:

Work is continuing... to improve cultivated meat technology,” said Kaplan, “including exploring ways to reduce the cost of nutrients in the growth media, and improving the texture, taste, and nutritional content of the meat. Products have already been awarded regulatory approval for consumption in the U.S. and globally, although costs and availability remain limiting. I think advances like this will bring us much closer to seeing affordable cultivated meat in our local supermarkets within the next few years.”

So, it’s “lab-grown meat” for breakfast, zhe bugs for lunch, and cereal for dinner!

That’ll solve the obesity and cancer crises once and for all.

Interestingly — and I’m torn on how I feel about this from an economic freedom standpoint — several red states have introduced legislation to ban lab-grown meat, with the usual vegan and Climate Change™ goblins in opposition.

Via New York Times:

A measure in Florida that would ban sales of laboratory-grown meat has gained widespread attention beyond state borders. The bill, which is advancing through the Florida Legislature, would make the sale or manufacture of lab-grown meat a misdemeanor with a fine of $1,000. It’s one of a half-dozen similar measures in Arizona, Tennessee, West Virginia and elsewhere.

Opponents of lab-grown meat include beef and poultry associations worried that laboratory-made hamburgers or chicken nuggets could cut into their business.

Supporters include environmentalists who say it would reduce animal cruelty and potentially help slow climate change. Meat and dairy together account for about 14.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the United Nations.

I can’t say I’m entirely on board, in principle, with the banning of any particular product at the behest of a competing industry (the beef and poultry, in this case). On the other hand, I hope all the purveyors of this BS rot and wither away into destitution.
