Florida Tech president caught ‘tweaking language’ to skirt DEI ban

The intrepid investigative journalism outlet O'Keefe Media Group has struck gold again with an undercover video depicting the Florida Tech president copping to “tweaking language” in DEI curricula to avoid running afoul of Trump’s anti-DEI executive orders.

Via Florida Today (emphasis added):

The far-right activist who founded Project Veritas published a "gotcha-style" video Thursday featuring hidden-camera footage of Florida Institute of Technology President John Nicklow, claiming that* he admitted to "tweaking the language of DEI courses" to bypass a Gov. Ron DeSantis-backed ban…

On April 4, an unidentified person covertly recorded a Florida Tech conference-room meeting of about 20 psychology and behavior-analysis faculty members, said Lisa Steelman, dean of the School of Psychology. She said the group invited Nicklow to attend because faculty were concerned about changes in university DEI initiatives — "What can they teach? What can't they teach?" — since fundamentals of social psychology and cognitive psychology draw from decades of research around stereotypes and discrimination.

The meeting video showed clips of Nicklow remarking that government officials were looking for keywords, and some words can be changed so they're not scraped

Nicklow described how he was in Tallahassee discussing the $7 million request when an unidentified person turned around two monitor screens, asked, "Why are you so woke?" and cited the university's Institute for Culture, Collaboration and Management as an example. Nicklow said he made a call on the way home to tweak language, per the video.

*Note the insertion of the weasel phrase that O’Keefe “claimed” that Nicklow admitted “tweaking language” to avoid the anti-DEI dragnet when, in fact, it’s literally on video.

Could Florida Tech be bothered to do actual journalism to uncover the truth, or is it convenient for their agenda to simply report that someone “claimed” something without verifying whether it actually happened?

Pride Month™ war-chest not what it used to be

Via Business Insider (emphasis added):

LGBTQ+ Pride month is close on the horizon, in June, and organizers of events, marches, and celebrations across the country are in the final stages of securing funding and sponsorships. In contrast to years past, when, if anything, the complaint was that Pride had become too corporate, planners are encountering a much different, colder scenario. This year, businesses are anxious about their involvement. While some are sticking to it, others are scaling back donations or declining to participate entirely. They're scared of the Trump administration's anti-DEI stance and threats of retribution. They're worried about the potential social media backlash. And they're reacting accordingly.”

Biden: I never saw ‘colored kids’ before the fourth grade

This isn’t exactly a DEI DeathWatch in the Golden Age story, but it’s nonetheless noteworthy for the former (alleged, nominal) president’s tone-deafness.

As if he had stumbled upon an exotic oddity at a zoo, the Brandon entity, drugged up sufficiently to speak semi-coherent words in public, described the awe he felt the first moment he beheld the sight of “colored kids” in the fourth grade: “I had never seen hardly any black people… I was only going on fourth grade. And I remember seeing kids going by at the time called ‘colored kids’ on a bus going by.”

Can you imagine the breathless outrage — the wall-to-wall coverage for multiple news cycles — had Trump referred to African-Americans as “colored people”?
