DEI’s Death and the Return of High Standards

What made this country great? From the Founders up to our own day, the greatest Americans were those who had the highest standards for themselves and for others. This sounds like an obvious statement, but America is unique among most nations in all of history in that it once had a whole-of-culture value to encourage the individual excellence of each man. Under DEI, that was no longer true, but now DEI is dying.

Donald Trump has ordered federal agencies to close down their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and divisions. Of course, no doubt many of these places will try to put up a fight and rename their programs or rehire woke activists under different names, but Trump has made it clear that he and his administration will fire the corrupt and accept no compromise. There are even private sector entities and educational institutions that are following the Trump administration’s example to close down DEI departments or reinstate higher standards.

“Be who you are and be that well,” said Francis de Sales, considered by Catholics to be the patron saint of journalists. George Washington Carver is quoted as saying, “99% of failures come from people who make excuses.” If only more journalists and politicians were interested in excellence rather than ideology. If only they were focused on producing results instead of making excuses. Outlets like PJ Media are fighting against mainstream media outlets with all their money and power. But under Trump, I think the elites will have to produce results or they will feel the consequences. We the People are wide awake and clamoring for reform.

The Air Force is dismantling its DEI programs. So are other government entities; indeed, the military is hurrying because new Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is cracking down hard on the woke, racist nonsense. Nineteen state attorneys general have this week followed up on Trump’s policies by demanding that Costco end its DEI programs.

It is not just government. Even before Trump took office, a number of companies announced an end to their DEI programs, including Southwest Airlines, Toyota, McDonald’s, Lowe’s, John Deere, Walmart, and Meta. The trend has continued after Trump’s inauguration, as Target reportedly shuttered its DEI policies.

And the trend is even hitting higher education. While not necessarily ending DEI, University of Miami has joined several other universities in reinstating its standardized testing requirement for admission, a step in the right direction to higher standards. Sometimes a pebble can start an avalanche. As George Washington said, “Perseverance and spirit have done wonders in all ages.” Persevere, my fellow patriots; we are winning.

Yes, some of the woke politicians, media talking heads, educators, celebrities, and generals are still in positions of influence, they are still wealthy and determined. We will still have to fight them in the coming months and years. But their reign is ending. The 2024 election was a resounding defeat of DEI and all its works. And may each one of us resolve to work not only for the end of this destructive ideology, but also for the renewal of the same spirit of excellence, the same passion for greatness, that made this country a light to the world.
