Did you see “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”? I have been a super-fan since I was little and had anticipated the movie coming out for a long time. To me, it was made so perfectly—it captured the old-school feel of the original, which is something I truly treasure.
I came across an article written by one of my favorite experts regarding the understanding of “Generation iY,” Dr. Tim Elmore. There is a story behind the legendary movie that I was unaware of and there were stars in the film that we never knew were there.
Daniel Craig (of James Bond fame) wanted to be in the movie so badly that he accepted the part of a stormtrooper. Of course, we never knew who he was because he never took his helmet off. Simon Pegg played Unkar Plutt, Bill Hader played BB-8, and Ewan McGregor was the voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi, among others. In all, 24 movie stars took bit parts and didn’t mind being left off the marquee, just to be part of this huge movie.
There is a message in this unique trivia. Elmore points out that in life, it’s about being part of the story, not just being the star. Our world teaches kids to “build a platform” that’s all about how many likes, shares, and views they have on social media. Parents encourage this self-centeredness by telling their children they are “stars” and fawning about how “special” they are. Encouraging this false sense of accomplishment and entitlement breeds selfish behaviors.
We must be able to show our kids that the cause is much more important than one character may be. That the team effort is going to be more rewarding than the one man show.
