With speculation mounting over who Ron DeSantis might appoint to replace Marco Rubio in the U.S. Senate, as Rubio has been nominated to be Secretary of State in a second Trump administration, several potential candidates have surfaced. Names like Lara Trump and Matt Gaetz have been floated as possible picks. But there’s an alternative worth considering that could outshine them all.
"We have already received strong interest from several possible candidates, and we continue to gather names of additional candidates and conduct preliminary vetting. More extensive vetting and candidate interviews will be conducted over the next few weeks, with a selection likely made by the beginning of January," DeSantis said last week. "Florida deserves a Senator who will help President Trump deliver on his election mandate, be strong on immigration and border security, take on the entrenched bureaucracy and administrative state, reverse the nation’s fiscal decline, be animated by conservative principles, and has a proven record of results."
Whoever is appointed would serve until the next statewide election is held, and that person is free to run for the position if they want to. So, perhaps DeSantis should appoint himself.
The idea isn’t as far-fetched as it sounds. DeSantis has proven himself as one of the most popular and effective leaders in the country, securing commanding victories in statewide elections. He helped turn Florida into a solid red state. His track record of success makes him an ideal candidate to step into the Senate.
While several names have been floated for the role, DeSantis might be the best choice Florida—and the nation—could ask for.
From a political perspective, the move might be somewhat controversial but a strategic part of a longterm plan for DeSantis. He is term-limited as governor and will be out of office after 2026.

Of course, there’s a significant downside to this scenario: Florida would lose an incredible governor who has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in advancing a conservative agenda. DeSantis has transformed Florida into a model for limited government, economic growth, election integrity, and cultural pushback against leftist overreach.
Still, the potential benefits of DeSantis taking Rubio’s Senate seat are hard to ignore. It would ensure a steady hand representing Florida in Washington and allow DeSantis to remain a pivotal force in American politics. Whether he ultimately makes this bold move remains to be seen, but it’s a prospect that could shake up the political landscape in 2024 and beyond.
I know there are some Trump supporters who think DeSantis was disloyal for running for president. Yeah, well, get over it. DeSantis is the future of the GOP, and I strongly believe he will be president one day. Serving in the Senate would help position to make that move again down the road.
