Just How Bad Are Things for the Democrats?

Things are not going well for the Democrats. They lost the Oval Office, the House, and the Senate in last year’s elections in a brutal rejection of their radicalism. Polls and focus groups have repeatedly shown that voters don’t believe Democrats care about the issues that matter most to them anymore.

Now that Democrats are out of power and licking their wounds, they have no idea what to do next.

“Democratic lawmakers, activists and strategists across the ideological spectrum are engaged in a fierce debate over how badly damaged the 2024 election left the party’s brand, a consequential internal argument that is already shaping early efforts to rebuild,” reports the New York Times. According to the report, Democratic leaders “are in sharp disagreement over how to interpret losses that not only returned Mr. Trump to power but also put Republicans in total control of the federal government.”

According to the report, there’s a cacophony of voices in the party demanding a reckoning—a complete reinvention of the party. That would be the smart move. However, not everyone is on board with such a drastic overhaul. Some prefer a wait-and-see approach, banking on a potential backlash against President Trump’s ambitious White House agenda.

My money is on the Democrats hoping to ride that wave of public discontent to reclaim the House of Representatives in 2026. But it’s a risky gamble, infused with denial, as they cling to the hope that the tide of public opinion will turn against Trump. Voters elected him to jump-start our economy and fix the border crisis. Not only are voters more optimistic about the future now, but the successes of Trump’s deportation efforts are undeniable.

A complete reinvention would be better. Trade in the preferred pronouns for sound policies that the public can support.

Really, at this point, they don’t have much to lose.

According to a new Quinnipiac poll, the Democratic Party is in a tailspin, with just 31 percent of voters holding a favorable opinion. Meanwhile, a staggering 57 percent view them unfavorably—this is the lowest approval rating recorded since Quinnipiac began tracking this data. Conversely, Republicans are experiencing a surge in support, reaching a record high of 43 percent favorable ratings in the same survey. Sure, Republicans are underwater, too, but only by two points, not 26, like the Democratic Party.

This tells us that the party leaders who think that they don’t need to adapt and wait for public sentiment to turn on Trump are deluding themselves. The Quinnipiac poll reveals loud and clear that voters are solidly in favor of key Republican policies. A whopping 60 percent support sending U.S. troops to the southern border to enforce border security—that’s no small number! And it doesn’t stop there. A significant 44 percent back the deportation of all illegal aliens, while another 39 percent are on board with deporting those convicted of crimes. Shockingly, only six percent oppose deportations altogether. This is a mandate for action, and it’s evident that the public is fed up with the Biden-era status quo.

The message is loud and clear: Americans want real solutions to border security, and they’re looking to Republicans to deliver. If Democrats think “resist” is a strategy to win over public sentiment, they are kidding themselves.
