WASHINGTON — Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters compared Kanye West’s shift to Christian music with his new number-one gospel album Jesus is King to when music legend Prince became a Jehovah’s Witness.
Grohl, who surprised fans by appearing at West’s rap festival last year, was asked for his opinion of West’s new record.
“I haven’t heard it. You know what? I heard that — wait — is he trying to change the stuff that he used to curse on?” Grohl said after speaking at a conference in Washington. “Well, you know, Prince kind of did the same thing when Prince was a Jehovah’s Witness. It happens.”
Prince reportedly became a Jehovah’s Witness in 2001.
Grohl, a Grammy Award-winning artist, was referring to the news that West is not going to perform his old hip-hop material as it was originally recorded.
Some critics of West’s new album thought it was too short and sounded unfinished. The entire album runs 27 minutes.
“You know what? One of my favorite records is 26 minutes long — Slayer’s Reign in Blood,” Grohl said. “A little different than Kanye’s new record.”
