Dear Undecided Voters: What the Heck?!?!?!?

A lot is said and written about the deep political divide here in the United States. Many people say that it's the most divided we've ever been as a nation.

Many people apparently haven't heard of the American Civil War.

Things are pretty intense, though. One might assume that picking a side is pretty easy under these circumstances. Rumor has it, however, that there are still a lot of voters out there floating around in some murky gray area who are still on the fence about who they'll vote for, or if they'll vote at all.

Seriously, people, what's up with that?

Full disclosure: most of what I'll write in this column about undecided and independent voters applies in any presidential election as far as I'm concerned. Everything just has a little extra something on it this year.

In theory, both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are still chasing undecided voters at this late stage. I'm sure that some who refer to themselves as independents can be counted among the undecideds, but not many. In my decades of experience, I've found that most people who refer to themselves as independent almost exclusively vote for one party or another. Remember, Bernie Sanders calls himself an independent.

He's not voting for Trump.

Whether it's a couple thousand or a couple million who make up this difficult-to-define voting bloc that's supposed to break one way in the final tally and decide this election, I would love to meet even one or two of them in person before Nov. 5 and ask them how they made it so far without picking a side.

Other than a couple of policy ideas that Harris stole from Trump when her handlers were desperate to make it seem like she had a brain, there isn't a lot of overlap between the candidates. Do you want to keep letting criminals enter the country at will, or would you like to stop that? Do you want to keep funding insane green energy mandates, or would you like a tax cut? Do you think it's bad to have a dude wearing a g-string and pasties reading "Green Eggs and Ham" to third-graders?

There aren't a lot of "Hmmm..." options here.

Allow me to reach into my tinfoil hat closet now and posit that maybe, just maybe, there aren't as many undecided voters out there as the ivory-tower pollsters would have us believe. Maybe they mostly broke for Trump, but the biased polling gurus don't want us to know that.

Just a thought.

People can rightfully complain about the uniparty in Washington, but there are still stark differences in the philosophies of the two major parties. D.C. dinner parties tend to make many of them go away. Still, when it's time to vote, there aren't enough similarities to create any confusion.

Unless you've been in a coma since the mid-'90s.

Apologies to anyone who has, and welcome back.

The Democrats are very different from those you knew when you went under.
