Obesity is amazing. It’s, like, the greatest thing ever!
Oh, not for health reasons. And it’s generally not attractive — though your own opinion may differ on that front. And there’s really no advantage to being obese.
No, obesity is amazing because it “can help reproduce racial injustice.” The latest, as reported by The College Fix:
An assistant professor at Portland State University recently argued that talking about obesity “can help reproduce racial injustice.”
Rachel Sanders, who teaches political science through an intersectional feminist lens, asserted in a July 28 article in the journal Groups, Politics, and Identities that “even sympathetic representations of obesity as a pathology most prevalent among black and Latina/o women and children can help reproduce racial injustice.”
Black people have the highest rate of obesity in America, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which explains why much of the discourse surrounding obesity references race, Sanders laments.
Talking about the high rate of obesity among racial minorities is problematic, she contends, because doing so can “effectively reify white superiority and maintain white dominance,” especially at a time when “fatness is deeply stigmatizing, fat bodies denote civic unfitness, and high white obesity rates jeopardize whiteness.”
Everything is problematic these days.
You can’t talk about obesity because it’s fat shaming. You can’t talk about a health problem in a minority community because of some ridiculous claims of it leading to racial discrimination or some such nonsense.
The problem is, obesity is a health problem. I say this as a fat guy, so I’m in the same boat.
By pretending that there are social justice concerns regarding obesity that should take precedence, the only people who profit are the doctors and hospitals that will treat the heart disease, strokes, and diabetes that result.
You’d think the left would understand this. You’d think the group that shouts down any behavior it doesn’t approve of would get this. You’d think the crowd that wants everyone’s healthcare paid for by the American taxpayers would understand the costs associated with this position.
But you’d be wrong.
Instead, they’ll try to protect the behavior regardless of any harm. They enable it and promote the attitude that if you’re overweight and aren’t having any problems at that time, then you’re healthy and no one should say anything about your weight.
Unfortunately, by the time these people realize they’ve been lied to, it’s too late. They already have heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, or any of a number of other issues. But the people who enabled that behavior don’t care because they’ll pretend one has nothing to do with the other.
They’re going to kill people, and act righteously in the process about how they’re standing up against racism, sexism, and whatever else.
