WASHINGTON — The White House said National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow has a good prognosis after President Trump tweeted on the way to his meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un that the administration’s chief economic advisor had suffered a heart attack.
Kudlow, 70, was one of the administration’s point men waging war against Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for “betrayal” on the Sunday shows for Trudeau’s vows to stand up against U.S. tariffs.
Kudlow then brought up North Korea, and said “POTUS is not going to let a Canadian prime minister push him around on the eve of this.”
Trump tweeted from Singapore, “Our Great Larry Kudlow, who has been working so hard on trade and the economy, has just suffered a heart attack. He is now in Walter Reed Medical Center.”
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders followed up with a statement on Kudlow describing “what his doctors say was a very mild heart attack.”
“Larry is currently in good condition at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and his doctors expect he will make a full and speedy recovery,” Sanders said. “The president and his administration send their thoughts and prayers to Larry and his family.”
There was also swift reaction from lawmakers on the Hill. “Paul & I are thinking of @larry_kudlow. We are confident he is in good hands at Walter Reed Medical Center & wish him a speedy recovery,” tweeted House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
Kudlow has been candid about his past addiction to cocaine and alcohol. He said in March that he has been sober for 23 years.
His wife, Julie, told the Washington Post that Kudlow is “doing fine.”
“Doctors here are fabulous,” she added.
