You Won't Believe How BuzzFeed Reacted to Being Wrong About THIS

My attitude toward the whole “Russian collusion” conspiracy theory can be summed up with one simple request: Wake me when Pence is president.

Does colluding with the Russians seem like the sort of thing Trump could do? Yeah, sure, I guess. Sorry, Trump fans, but I don’t trust the guy. Does that alone prove he did it? No, it does not. If there’s proof he did it, will I be angry at the people who prove it? Nope. The truth is the truth, no matter who’s telling it. My personal feelings about any particular individual have nothing to do with it. But the only people I trust less than the Trump administration are the people reporting on the Trump administration. The more openly they #Resist, and the less they try to hide their liberal bias, the less seriously I take them. Their sweat-drenched desperation to believe any story they think will hurt Trump, whether there’s any evidence or not, makes me just tune the whole thing out.

I don’t trust any of these creeps, and very little of what I see in the news is capable of surprising me anymore. Whatever happens, happens. Let the MAGA hats fall where they may.

So when BuzzFeed broke the HUGE BOMBSHELL STORY that Trump allegedly told Michael Cohen to lie to Congress about the scuttled Trump Tower project in Moscow, and 99% of the press cried out in ecstasy that they finally got ‘im, I was interested but skeptical. The story cited two anonymous “federal law enforcement officials” and didn’t present any evidence to back up the claim. That might be enough for you, if you’re still enraged that Hillary Clinton failed you in 2016, but it’s not enough for me.

Then the authors of the story, Jason Leopold and Anthony Cormier, started making the cable news rounds. And they told us two contradictory things: Leopold claimed they both had seen the evidence that backed up the story — “internal company emails, text messages, and a cache of other documents” — but Cormier claimed they hadn’t.

Either you’ve seen the evidence for yourselves or you haven’t, fellas.

At the same time, I was trying to figure out why the name “Jason Leopold” sounded familiar. It turns out that Leopold has a “checkered past,” as he describes it, having botched previous HUGE BOMBSHELL STORIES about Karl Rove and Enron. In 2005, Leopold wrote an autobiography in which he admitted to a lifetime of drug addiction, mental illness, and “lying, cheating and backstabbing.” Dismiss all that if you want, but I’m not sure how it’s supposed to inspire confidence in his reporting.

And this definitely doesn’t help:

Ouch. Yeah, that might be a problem. If BuzzFeed doesn’t want to be dismissed as the home of cat listicles and “Which ‘Friends’ Character Are You?” quizzes, they need to either prove they have the story or admit they don’t. I mean, even Ronan Farrow has come out and said he knew about the allegation but wouldn’t touch it. Guess he learned his lesson after his abject failure to take down Brett Kavanaugh.

It’s amazing how everything can change in the blink of an eye:

WaPo Saturday: “Mueller’s denial, according to people familiar with the matter, aims to make clear that none of those statements in [Buzzfeed] story are accurate.”
Friday: “Impeachment” was said more than 200 times on CNN & MSNBC after each news org couldn’t confirm the story.

And now, all the Trumpkins have stopped screaming that Mueller is a deep-state operative, and the #Resistance has stopped swooning over Mueller’s integrity and honor. They’ve switched sides, just like that, and they either won’t or can’t see the contradiction. Shrug emoji!

Wanting to believe a story that can hurt someone you hate isn’t journalism, it’s just gossip. Lots of things are “Big if true,” but that doesn’t prove they’re true. Our moral, ethical, and intellectual betters in the media need to do better than this, or they’ll keep helping the man they desperately want to stop.

The Dems wanted the GOP to nominate this guy, and now they’re doing their damnedest to get him re-elected. Trump’s best friend is the press, and it’s driving them as crazy as he is.
