WASHINGTON — Washington Nationals Manager Dave Martinez reflected on his team’s appearance with President Donald Trump at the White House for a World Series victory celebration, saying “people have different opinions but we enjoyed it.”
Some social media users thought players Ryan Zimmerman and Kurt Suzuki, specifically, were too political at the celebration.
“Couldn’t be more disappointed in the @Nationals @kurtsuzuki #Zimmerman. I was a fan,” wrote one Twitter user.
Another user wrote, “So disappointed in the @Nationals – especially Zimmerman and Suzuki. Wonder what Guerra thinks of his catcher rocking a MAGA hat?”
Others applauded Zimmerman’s comments.
“Zimmerman = class act,” a Twitter user wrote.
Martinez was asked how he thought the White House visit went.
“We had a great time. You know, it’s an honor when a team is invited to the White House, it really is. You know, people have different opinions but we enjoyed it. We had fun,” Martinez said during a special signing at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Springfield, Va., on Tuesday night just outside of Washington, D.C.
Suzuki responded to the criticism of him putting on a “Make America Great Again” hat at the celebration.
“It was amazing,” Suzuki reportedly told USA Today after the event via text message. “That was the president. Just trying to have some fun.”
He also wrote that “everybody makes everything political. It was about our team winning the World Series.”
