When my kids were little they would occasionally try to get away with saying “Not fair!” when confronted by a parental edict they didn’t like. My answer was always the same: “Where did you get the idea that life is supposed to be fair?” If they persisted in whining about the unfairness of it all, I’d do my best to even up the score—usually by assigning extra chores or taking away privileges. While this might sound a little insensitive, I was doing it because I didn’t want them to have unrealistic expectations about the “real” world. The truth is, life’s not fair and the sooner kids learn and accept that, the happier they’ll be in life. I also didn’t want them to grow up to be entitled brats who expected the world to cater to their whims and demands.
Unfortunately, reality TV star and presidential candidate Donald Trump somehow missed that important nugget of wisdom growing up. Take a look at this whine-fest, courtesy of Digitas Daily:
I’d be embarrassed if my kids ever acted like this in public—and absolutely mortified if they did it as grown men. And if they kept doing it over and over again, knowing there were cameras pointed at them? I’m shuddering just thinking about how I’d feel as a mom. The behavior is unacceptable for anyone over the age of five—and just plain weird for a 69-year-old man who ought to know better.
Parents, this can be a great teachable moment for your kids. Telling them not to be “that guy” may save them a world of grief in life—and as an added bonus, you’ll be performing a community service by not sending more stompy-footed crybabies out into the world. Trust me when I tell you that the world doesn’t need any more of them.
