As radical leftists continue to take the necessary steps to bury the Democratic Party in 2020, a few of the more rational party members are starting to push back in earnest.
Chief among them is Barack Obama. The former president has spoken out against political “wokeness” and the “cancel culture” and warned Democrats running for president not to “tear down the system.”
This resulted in a backlash from the radicals who are angry over Obama’s apparent betrayal. But Obama, more than anything, wants Democrats to win. And he knows that pushing Medicare for All will be a losing issue, as will the tens of trillions of dollars of freebees being pushed by Sanders and Warren.
“Back when Sanders seemed like more of a threat than he does now, Obama said privately that if Bernie were running away with the nomination, Obama would speak up to stop him,” the report says. An Obama spokesperson, however, reportedly noted that the former president has stated that he would get behind the Democratic nominee regardless of who it is.
One adviser said that while they personally had no knowledge of this, the threat of a Sanders nomination would likely be cause for action.
“I can’t really confirm that,” the adviser said, regarding the possibility of Obama trying to stop Sanders. “He hasn’t said that directly to me. The only reason I’m hesitating at all is because, yeah, if Bernie were running away with it, I think maybe we would all have to say something. But I don’t think that’s likely. It’s not happening.”
That adviser underestimates the attraction of Sanders and the lack of a candidate who can track to the right of him to gather in southern Democrats and more moderate voters, as well as independents.
The truth is, Democrats don’t want a “moderate” candidate. They want a candidate who can win in November 2020. Both Sanders and Warren look pretty good a year out from Election Day. They are both beating Trump in both the popular vote and the Electoral College.
But Trump, who will have more money than God to spend on the campaign, has yet to even try to define either candidate. And Democrats are making Trump’s job easier and easier as they push their radical agenda ever leftward.
Obama dismissed far-left positions as not being popular among average Americans, even if they make waves on social media.
“Even as we push the envelope and we are bold in our vision, we also have to be rooted in reality and the fact that voters, including the Democratic voters and certainly persuadable independents or even moderate Republicans, are not driven by the same views that are reflected on certain, you know, left-leaning Twitter feeds,” Obama said.
Obama has said he will support the Democratic nominee, no matter who it is. So you can expect his “intervention” to be mostly behind the scenes. But former presidents — even one who are beloved of their party like Obama is — really don’t have much pull. The Democratic Party has moved even farther left than it was when Obama was president. And while this new crop of leaders respects Obama, I doubt that if Sanders was the clear choice of Democratic voters that Obama could do much to save them from destruction.
