Bernie Sanders' Heart: America in a Time of Rage

Although I completely disagree with Bernie Sanders’ policies, I join with other Americans in wishing him a speedy recovery from his recent surgery during which stents were inserted to open an artery blockage.

But, as a man of a “certain age,” only a few years younger than Mr. Sanders, who is 78, there is something I must say to him, myself, and others: Your anger can kill you.

Bernie, for many years, has been an angry man — anger, he would say, that exists for a reason (the cause of democratic socialism), but angry nevertheless.

Indeed, we live in an angry country and it only seems to be getting angrier. I have experienced nothing like it in my lifetime. People on opposite sides don’t even attempt to talk to each other. Families and friendships have been riven across the land. Life in our country is nauseating, frankly.

As I type this, I am watching the Nancy Pelosi-Adam Schiff press conference over impeachment. Their level of anger is unbearable. They can barely suppress it, joined, as they are, by a media that eggs them on like a Greek chorus when it cheers on a hero. But unlike the Greeks, there are no warnings about hubris. Lies pour out over lies, generated by that same anger exacerbated by envy and fear of their being investigated, as is, of course, happening.

The irony of all this is extraordinary because very little, if anything, is wrong. In historical terms, the world is more at peace than ever with more people living decently. America itself is at or near its apex.

Yet, the rage continues and builds. What does this say about the human psyche? Nothing good, I’m afraid.

Also, at this point, the stock market is plummeting. The Democrats’ rage is recapitulating Cloward-Piven, that 1960s doctrine that aimed at ruining the economy so that socialist ideas could take over the country. How Venezuelan of them!

So rage governs sense. How many more septuagenarian presidential candidates will end up with coronary issues or worse?

Will lessons be learned? Will Bernie Sanders come back from his heart illness a reasonable person? Will he refrain from pointing at the camera, lecturing us all?

Not likely, I’m also afraid. The rage may have only just begun. The Democrats are playing with fire.
